Cultivating Hopefulness in Addiction Treatment
It is easy to have a negative attitude about addiction treatment, especially when you are involved in drug and alcohol abuse. This is even truer when past attempts to quit have resulted in relapses and failures, creating more discouragement for an addict and their family and friends.
You have invested a lot of your time, money, and energy into this addiction whether you have been through a rehab program in the past or not. It’s easy to beat yourself up for the mistakes that you have made. However, in order to beat substance abuse you often have to take the more difficult route. In the beginning, it can be very challenging to have a positive attitude about addiction treatment, recovery, and your prospects for the future. The depression and anxiety that are often caused by addiction can further complicate matters, so if you are dealing with these issues you should consider getting help specifically for a dual diagnosis. Counselors and other professionals in a rehab center can help you to cultivate a positive attitude, but they cannot force you to do it.
What hopefulness, determination, and positive thinking ultimately come down to is a decision. This is difficult even for many people who don’t have to deal with a substance abuse problem to realize, but once the medical aspects of depression are taken care of, you can choose the way that you think about things. Whether life is a buffet of possibilities or a dark and gloomy place is up to you. If you think that you will experience a relapse as soon as you finish a drug rehab program, you probably will. When you tell yourself that you aren’t strong enough and dwell on past mistakes, addiction recovery becomes that much harder. Look for things to motivate you in this journey, and focus on the possibilities that sobriety will offer.
