Do Vitamin Supplements help During Alcohol Detox Treatment Programs
There are some widely different methods of alcohol addiction treatment being used in the world today, but that’s true for all kinds of substance abuse. So it does not come as much of a surprise. What’s more interesting to note is that these methods are proving to be quite effective and each of them has a legion of believers who will vouch for their efficacy.
One of the popular methods nowadays is to curb alcohol detox withdrawal symptoms through vitamin supplementation. Alcohol detox is that part of the alcohol addiction treatment program where the alcohol is removed from the body through medication and other means. The problem with this method is that it brings in withdrawal symptoms which can be quite painful.
This is where vitamin supplementation can come in handy. The main vitamins provided as supplements are the vitamins of the B complex, notably vitamin B1 (thiamine) and vitamin B3 (niacin). The basic reason is that people who are overly dependent on alcohol do not have a proper diet and hence their bodies are depleted of the necessary vitamins, but there’s another reason too. These vitamins are water soluble. Dehydration can occur during the alcohol detox program. If that happens, the amount of these vitamins will become dangerously low. Hence, the supplementation helps.
Each of these vitamins is useful for the body in their own right. Vitamin B1 is necessary for the proper functioning of the brain. That becomes helpful during alcohol detox when the brain acts below par. Vitamin B3 is good for lowering the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the body. Since most alcoholics are obese too, this can help in preventing further complications due to cholesterol levels.
