Drug addiction
Drug addiction is a condition where a person takes a drug every day. Drug addiction involves compulsively seeking to use a substance, regardless of the potentially negative social, psychological and physical consequences. Certain drugs, such as narcotics and cocaine, are more likely to cause physical dependence than are other drugs.
What is difference between drug abuse and drug addiction? Someone can abuse drugs without being addicted but the opposite is not true. It is not possible to be addicted to drugs without abusing them. Drug abuse means the voluntary abuse of drugs. Dependence is a bit further down the line and involves compulsive abuse of drugs – i.e. where people are driven to abuse them by a powerful internal compulsion.
Addiction is very destructive, and most of the time people who are suffering from it end up hurting themselves and their love ones. It is hard to overcome but once the person began to see addiction as a problem in their life they can immediately seek alcoholism treatment or addiction treatment.
Signs and symptoms
Addiction to any drug may include these general characteristics:
- Increase or decrease in appetite; changes in eating habits, unexplained weight loss or gain.
- Smell of substance on breath, body or clothes.
- Extreme hyperactivity; excessive talkativeness.
- Needle marks or bruises on lower arm, legs or bottom of feet.
- Change in overall attitude / personality with no other identifiable cause.
Types of Drugs
All drugs can be divided into seven broad categories:
- Cannabinoids (e.g., hashish and marijuana)

Drug treatment and rehabilitation centers are typically operating on the belief that social or philosophical factors are causing the addictive behavior.
People with addiction work hard to resolve them, and with the support of family members and friends they are able to recover on their own. However in most cases, people they usually cannot stop drinking or using drugs by willpower alone. A lot of them require outside help, mostly from Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehab.
